The Difference between Counselling and NLP therapies

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a cognitive therapy offered by the Isian Centre of Metaphysics to assist people deal with issues in their lives.  When compared to traditional forms of therapy, such as counselling, a number of differences appear, not only in techniques and processes used, but also in desired outcomes.
counselCounselling is a “talking” therapy where the client explores, through talking, the difficulties they are having or distresses they are experiencing.  The role of the counsellor is to listen attentively to what is being said in order to form an understanding of the client’s perspective of the difficulties being experienced.  The counsellor does not give advice or guide the client take a particular course of action. Instead, they are trained to reflect and help the client to clarify the problem at hand, enabling change, choices or help to release bottled up emotions and feelings.
Counselling can be very useful for helping people to deal with distressing emotions associated with bereavement and loss.  Counselling can be very useful for those people who benefit from being listened to or feel burdened by troubles.
nlpNLP takes a more “cognitive approach” in order to promote positive change in the client.  It is effective at alleviating emotional distress and behavioural problems due to the techniques used which are based on the philosophy that the content of our thoughts have a major influence on our emotions and behaviour.  Through using NLP solution-focused techniques, the client is able to eradicate or manage the types of thoughts that result in a particular state of mind (eg, anxiety), can be resolved.  Unlike “talking” therapies, the focus is not trying to find the cause of the client’s distress but rather the client will learn  how to improve their state of mind in this very instance.  This involves learning which factors maintain distress or problem and learning strategies to overcome problems that the client can practice in their own time.
nlp-communication-model.gifNLP is effectively a common sense, practical and effective therapy.  Neuro means brain, linguistic relates to how we use language both to communicate with others, and within our own brain and programming relates to how we create and use patterns of behaviour in everyday life in order to get results.  We know that we experience the world through our senses and that this information is translated into thoughts.  How we each use this internal language in our own brains directly affects our physiology, emotions and behaviour.  People tend to develop habits and patterns of using internal language that have positive or negative effects on their emotions and behaviour.
NLP approaches are practical and focused on problem solving.  Often people will seek cognitive therapies such as NLP, when they want solutions to their problem or to move on from limiting thinking, feelings or behaviour.
